I typically take a minimalist approach to wellness, and that’s one of the many reasons I love circadian biology. There are so many ways to harness the power of light that are absolutely free.
Why infrared light is important:
First, it should be noted: all of the various spectrums of light from the sun play a role when it comes to supporting life, and the ever-changing nature of the light spectrum communicates to our body the time of day, as well as the current season, that we are in. Supporting our circadian rhythm by aligning with the natural light cycles is absolutely essential to our well being.
Sunlight contains healing infrared wavelengths all throughout the day, which means that even in the middle of a winter snowstorm in Maine, infrared light is present. These are the first wavelengths to appear in the morning, and the last to dissipate at sunset. As long as we are outdoors during the day, infrared light is always available to us. UVA and UVB rise and fall in intensity, depending on the time of day, and the season we are in, but infrared is constant.
Why is this meaningful, and how does it relate to our modern lifestyles?
What this means is: when we are connected to the outdoors, we are meant to be bathing in infrared light all day long. Infrared light is anti-inflammatory and supports the body’s natural energy production and healing & repair processes.
Below are some of the ways we have removed ourselves from infrared light in our indoor, modern environments:

Modern windows: high efficiency, modern windowpanes block infrared light from coming into your home.
Phone and computer screens: as with LED bulbs, phone and computer screens emit a lot of blue and green light, but no infrared.
